This bill amends existing Mississippi law to provide that the simple possession of 30 grams or less of marijuana is a civil infraction punishable by a $100 fine, rather than a criminal misdemeanor. The bill also grants municipal courts jurisdiction to impose these civil penalties. Additionally, the bill specifies that a person who possesses more than one gram, but not more than 30 grams of marijuana in a motor vehicle commits a civil infraction punishable by a $100 fine, rather than a criminal misdemeanor. The bill takes effect on July 1, 2024.
