This bill establishes the Minnesota SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) Step Up for Seniors program to provide a supplemental benefit to eligible seniors (those aged 55 and older) who receive less than the minimum monthly SNAP benefit of $50. The state will provide a supplement to bring the total SNAP benefit up to at least $50 for these eligible households. The supplemental benefit will not be counted as income for other programs that do not count SNAP benefits as income. The program will be administered similarly to the federal SNAP program, and the commissioner can increase the minimum monthly benefit amount as deemed appropriate, subject to state appropriations and federal funding. The bill also requires the commissioner to apply for any necessary federal waivers or approvals to implement the program, and appropriates $ from the general fund in fiscal year 2025 for the program.
