This bill permits certain persons to operate Type S school buses, which are motor vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 3,000 pounds or more, originally designed by the manufacturer with a maximum seating capacity of nine passengers or less, excluding the driver, and used to transport students to and from school for secular or religious education and school-related activities. Individuals who meet specific requirements, such as being at least 21 years old, holding a valid basic driver's license for at least three years, and passing certain examinations and training programs, can obtain a Type S School Bus Certificate from the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission and operate these smaller school buses without the need for a commercial driver's license, passenger endorsement, or school bus endorsement. The bill also amends existing laws to include references to Type S school buses and their drivers.
