This bill provides up to three consecutive workdays of paid bereavement leave to full-time state employees in North Carolina upon the death of an immediate family member, such as a spouse, parent, child, or grandparent. Part-time state employees will receive a prorated amount of paid bereavement leave. The bill requires the State Human Resources Commission to adopt rules and policies regarding the bereavement leave, including a minimum service period and the submission of a statement regarding the deceased. The bill also appropriates $2 million from the General Fund to the Reserve for Compensation Increases to fund the paid bereavement leave, and it applies to state agencies, public schools, and community colleges. The provisions of the bill become effective on July 1, 2024.
