This bill, the Modernizing Wildfire Safety and Prevention Act of 2024, proposes several key provisions to address recommendations from the Report of the Wildland Fire Mitigation and Management Commission. It would establish a Middle Fire Leaders Academy to provide training for wildfire and beneficial fire leaders, create a wildfire workforce grant program, improve retirement portability and provide casualty assistance for federal wildland firefighters, establish a national smoke monitoring and alert system, conduct a health risk assessment for wildfire smoke exposure, make improvements to existing FEMA disaster and mitigation programs, create a Joint Office of the Fire Environment Center to provide data-driven support for fire management, and require timely payments for certain programs addressing wildfire damages.
