This bill revises existing New Jersey law to require both middle and high schools, as well as institutions of higher education, to print mental health and suicide crisis resource telephone numbers on the back of student identification cards. Specifically, for middle and high schools (grades 7-12), the telephone number will be determined by the Commissioner of Human Services in consultation with the Commissioner of Education. For higher education institutions, the number will be determined by the Commissioner of Human Services in consultation with the Secretary of Higher Education. Schools and institutions are also permitted to include additional contact information such as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline or on-campus crisis centers. The bill aims to improve student access to mental health resources by ensuring that crisis contact information is readily available on student ID cards. The changes will take effect immediately and will apply to new student and replacement identification cards issued in the first full school year or academic year following the bill's enactment.
