This bill revises existing law to modify requirements for suicide prevention contact information on student identification cards in New Jersey. Previously, the law mandated that public schools (grades 7-12) and higher education institutions print the New Jersey Suicide Prevention Hopeline (NJ Hopeline) number and crisis text line contact information on student ID cards. The new bill changes this to require schools to print a telephone number for mental health and suicide crisis resources, with the specific contact information to be determined by the Commissioner of Human Services in consultation with the Commissioner of Education (for K-12 schools) or the Secretary of Higher Education (for colleges). Schools are now also explicitly allowed to provide additional contact information, such as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline or on-campus crisis center information. The changes will apply to new student identification cards and replacement cards issued during the first full school or academic year after the bill's enactment, giving schools flexibility in implementing the updated requirements while ensuring students have access to critical mental health support resources.
