This bill amends existing law to create new criminal offenses related to making false reports to law enforcement officers. Specifically, it makes it a misdemeanor for someone to knowingly report false or baseless information about an allegation of misconduct by a law enforcement officer while that officer is performing their official duties. Furthermore, it elevates this offense to a class A misdemeanor if the false report concerns an allegation of criminal conduct by a law enforcement officer acting in their official capacity. These new provisions are in addition to existing laws that already criminalize knowingly providing false information to law enforcement to induce them to believe another person has committed an offense, or reporting an offense or danger that did not occur or exist. The bill is set to take effect on January 1, 2026.
