This bill modifies graduation requirements for students in the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program, specifically addressing how these students can meet the Algebra I end-of-course assessment requirement. Starting in the 2025-2026 school year, students who have been in an ESOL program for less than two school years and have met all other high school diploma requirements will be allowed to demonstrate their math skills through formative assessments instead of passing the statewide standardized Algebra I end-of-course assessment. These alternative assessments will be designed to show the student's grade-level math expectations, as will be outlined in future state board rules. The bill aims to provide more flexible graduation pathways for ESOL students who are still developing English language proficiency, recognizing that their mathematical abilities might be better assessed through alternative means. The provisions will take effect on July 1, 2025, giving schools and students time to prepare for this new assessment option.
