AI Summary

This bill clarifies a previous law regarding prior authorization for air ambulance services by explicitly limiting the prohibition on requiring prior authorization to only nonprofit air ambulance service providers. Specifically, the bill amends a section of Maine insurance law to specify that health insurance carriers cannot require a prior authorization for air ambulance services only when the service provider is a nonprofit organization. The bill is being introduced to correct an unintentional omission in Public Law 2023, chapter 591, which originally intended to apply this restriction only to nonprofit air ambulance providers but did not include that specific language. The legislation is being presented as an emergency measure, which means it will take effect immediately upon approval, and it will apply retroactively to August 9, 2024. The goal is to ensure that the law precisely reflects the Legislature's original intent of protecting nonprofit air ambulance service providers from burdensome prior authorization requirements when transporting patients to or between hospitals for urgent care.
