This bill, known as the "Supervising Upcoming Professionals for Practice in Official Roles in Therapy (SUPPORT) act", amends the New York education law to expand the types of professionals who can supervise clinical social workers seeking licensure. Currently, clinical social workers can complete their required three years of full-time supervised postgraduate clinical experience under a psychiatrist, licensed psychologist, or licensed clinical social worker in a facility setting. The bill adds a new category of supervision: mental health practitioners who have been granted the privilege to diagnose and develop assessment-based treatment plans under article one hundred sixty-three of the education law. This change will provide more flexibility for aspiring clinical social workers in completing their supervision requirements by broadening the pool of potential supervisors. The modification aims to support professional development and potentially ease the process of obtaining licensure in the mental health field. The bill will take effect immediately upon enactment.
