This bill, known as the "Supervising Upcoming Professionals for Practice in Official Roles in Therapy (SUPPORT) act", amends the education law to expand the types of supervisors who can oversee clinical social work experience for licensure. Currently, licensed clinical social workers can gain their required three years of supervised postgraduate clinical experience under psychiatrists, licensed psychologists, or licensed clinical social workers in facility settings. The bill adds a new category of supervisor: mental health practitioners who have been granted the privilege to diagnose and develop assessment-based treatment plans under article one hundred sixty-three of the education law. This change provides more flexibility for aspiring clinical social workers in obtaining their required supervised experience by broadening the pool of potential supervisors. The bill will take effect immediately upon enactment, allowing for immediate implementation of the expanded supervision options for clinical social work licensure candidates.
