This bill amends the New York City Building Code to establish stricter requirements for renewing sidewalk shed permits, which are temporary structures used to protect pedestrians during building construction. Under the new provisions, contractors must submit a detailed report from a registered design professional documenting the current condition of the work site and progress made since the original permit was issued. Additionally, to renew a sidewalk shed permit, contractors must prove the permit is for an "ongoing construction project," which is defined as a project where construction workers are using the sidewalk shed for at least ten days per month over the previous year. The bill requires the commissioner to conduct an on-site inspection and mandates that contractors submit documentation showing dates and times the sidewalk shed was actively used. Contractors who submit false or misleading documentation can be subject to a civil penalty of up to $1,000. The goal appears to be preventing the prolonged, unnecessary occupation of public sidewalk space by construction projects that are not actively progressing. The bill will take effect 30 days after becoming law.
