The proposed bill raises this value threshold to $3,000, giving local authorities more flexibility in claiming abandoned vehicles of slightly higher worth. The bill allows local authorities to take ownership of these vehicles, with the understanding that they may choose to sell the vehicle as junk, salvage, dismantle it for parts, or destroy it. The legislation will take effect 180 days after it becomes law, providing time for local jurisdictions to prepare for the updated guidelines.
