Bill Summary
AN ACT to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to abandoned vehicles
AI Summary
This bill amends the New York Vehicle and Traffic Law to increase the wholesale value threshold for abandoned vehicles that can be immediately seized by local authorities from $1,250 to $3,000. Under the current law, if an abandoned vehicle has no license plates and is valued at $1,250 or less, the local jurisdiction can take immediate ownership of the vehicle. The proposed bill raises this value threshold to $3,000, giving local authorities more flexibility in claiming abandoned vehicles of slightly higher worth. The bill allows local authorities to take ownership of these vehicles, with the understanding that they may choose to sell the vehicle as junk, salvage, dismantle it for parts, or destroy it. The legislation will take effect 180 days after it becomes law, providing time for local jurisdictions to prepare for the updated guidelines.
