Bill Summary
AN ACT to amend the vehicle and traffic law, in relation to abandoned vehicles
AI Summary
This bill amends the New York Vehicle and Traffic Law by increasing the wholesale value threshold for abandoned vehicles that can be immediately seized by local authorities. Currently, abandoned vehicles with no license plates and a wholesale value of $1,250 or less can be taken ownership of by local authorities. The bill raises this threshold to $3,000, allowing local jurisdictions to more easily claim ownership of higher-value abandoned vehicles. The legislation maintains existing provisions that exempt local authorities from being required to obtain title to vehicles that will be sold as junk, salvage, dismantled, or destroyed. The bill will take effect 180 days after becoming law, giving local authorities time to adjust to the new value threshold for abandoned vehicle seizures.
