This bill amends the New York State education law to require both the State University of New York (SUNY) and the City University of New York (CUNY) to grant academic credits to veterans who are full-time undergraduate students in good standing. Specifically, veterans who are New York State residents and have served in active military or naval service under honorable conditions (including those furloughed to the reserve or serving in state military units) can apply to receive academic credits for military training or service courses. These credits will be granted without limitation towards the student's degree, provided the courses meet standards set by the American Council on Education. Additionally, no fees, tuition, or other charges can be assessed for these credits. The bill requires the board of trustees of each university system to develop procedures to implement these new provisions, and the changes will take effect on July 1st following the bill's enactment. This legislation aims to recognize and support veterans' prior military education and training by translating their service experiences into academic credits.
