This bill amends the New York State education law to require the State University of New York (SUNY) and the City University of New York (CUNY) to grant academic credits to veterans who are enrolled full-time as undergraduate students. The bill defines a "veteran" as a New York State resident who has served in active military or naval service of the United States and has been released under honorable conditions or furloughed to the reserve, including those who have served in the New York State Army National Guard, Air National Guard, or Naval Militia. Under this legislation, veterans can apply to receive academic credits without limitation toward their degree for military training or service courses that meet the standards of the American Council on Education. Importantly, no fees, tuition, or other charges will be assessed for these academic credits. The respective boards of trustees for SUNY and CUNY are required to develop procedures to implement these provisions. The bill will take effect on the first of July following its enactment, providing a clear pathway for veterans to have their military training recognized in their academic pursuits.
