This bill modifies Washington state law regarding driver's license suspensions for traffic infractions by providing an alternative pathway to avoid a full 60-day license suspension. Previously, drivers with three moving violations in one year or four in two years would automatically have their license suspended for 60 days. Under the new law, drivers can now take a safe driving course at any time after receiving notice of a potential suspension, which will allow them to terminate the suspension early. The course will result in a one-year probation period during which the driver must avoid additional moving violations. If another moving violation occurs during probation, a 30-day additional suspension will be imposed. Importantly, a driver can only use this early termination option once every five years. The bill also updates related administrative provisions, such as clarifying reissue fees and maintaining the overall goal of promoting safer driving behaviors. The changes aim to provide drivers with an educational alternative to outright license suspension while still maintaining accountability for repeated traffic infractions.
