This bill modifies the election law to improve absentee voting access for residents of nursing homes and senior citizen residences. Specifically, the bill requires boards of inspectors (local election workers responsible for managing polling places) to proactively assist residents in obtaining and completing absentee ballot applications. The board must deliver blank absentee ballot applications to residents who request them, help those residents fill out the applications, and then promptly provide the appropriate absentee ballot and envelope once the application is completed. If a resident is registered to vote in a different election district than the facility's location, the board of inspectors must obtain the correct ballot from the board of elections and deliver it to the voter. This legislation aims to make voting more accessible for seniors who may have mobility or comprehension challenges by providing direct, personalized assistance in the absentee voting process. The bill will go into effect 30 days after it becomes law.
