This bill creates a special license plate for members of the New York City Fire Riders Motorcycle Club, allowing active or retired uniformed members of the New York City Fire Department who are club members to request a distinctive license plate that reads "NYC Fire Riders". To obtain the plate, applicants must be New York state residents and provide proof of club membership to the Department of Motor Vehicles. The plate will be issued with the regular registration fee plus an additional annual service charge of $25. Before the plates can be designed and produced, the motorcycle club must either provide a $6,000 surety bond or demonstrate that at least 200 members have pre-ordered the plates with their non-refundable service charges. Any service charges collected will be deposited into a special fund for developing distinctive license plates. If fewer than 200 plates are sold within two years, the Department of Motor Vehicles can recover funds from the surety bond proportionate to the shortfall. The bill will take effect 180 days after becoming law, allowing time for the Department of Motor Vehicles to prepare for plate production and distribution.
