This bill amends Oklahoma's existing firearms law (Section 1277) to modify regulations around weapon carry in various public and private spaces. The bill removes provisions related to administrative fines and gives certain entities more flexibility in adopting weapon carry policies. Specifically, the bill allows private schools and private colleges/universities to adopt policies authorizing weapon possession on their properties, and provides that these institutions would not be liable for injuries arising from such policies, except in cases of gross negligence. The bill updates language around school districts' ability to authorize designated school personnel to carry handguns, clarifies parking and vehicle-related firearm regulations, and maintains existing exemptions for law enforcement, certain elected officials, and other authorized personnel. The bill also makes technical changes to language and references throughout the existing statute, such as standardizing punctuation and removing outdated terminology. The changes will take effect on November 1, 2025, giving institutions time to review and potentially update their weapon carry policies.
