AI Summary

This bill expands mandatory health insurance coverage for breast cancer screening by requiring insurers to provide supplemental imaging for patients at higher risk of breast cancer, regardless of age. Specifically, the bill mandates that health insurance policies cover low-dose mammography for patients 40 years and older with an annual mammogram, and for patients of any age who have an above-average risk of breast cancer (as determined by a risk-factor modeling tool), a personal history of breast cancer, or a family history of breast cancer. Additionally, by January 1, 2026, insurers must provide coverage for supplemental imaging deemed medically necessary by a patient's primary care provider, which can include breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound, or digital breast tomosynthesis (a three-dimensional breast imaging technique). The bill aims to reduce breast cancer incidences and related deaths by ensuring early and comprehensive screening, and it builds upon a previous study that assessed the social and financial impacts of similar mandatory coverage. The legislation will take effect on December 31, 2050, and does not impact any rights, penalties, or proceedings that occurred before its effective date.
