This bill modifies the existing statute governing juvenile bureaus' salary and expense regulations by removing specific salary percentage limitations for bureau directors and employees. Previously, the law capped the director's salary at 90% of county Class A officer salaries and other employees' salaries at 85% of Class A county officer salaries. The bill eliminates these specific percentage restrictions, instead giving the judge of the Juvenile Division more discretion in setting salaries, subject to county commissioners' administrative oversight. The bill maintains other existing provisions regarding expense reimbursement, such as mileage and conference-related expenses for directors and assistants. The bill also preserves the requirement that juvenile bureau expenses be funded through county charges or special sales taxes, and continues to mandate that the county excise board make necessary appropriations for salaries and administrative expenses. Additionally, the bill retains the provision that the district attorney represent the juvenile bureau in lawsuits, with alternative representation options if a conflict of interest exists. The bill is set to become effective on November 1, 2025.
