This bill amends the New York executive law to require the Office of General Services to provide designated parking spaces for Purple Heart recipients at state-owned or operated parking facilities. The bill mandates that these special parking spaces be located as close as reasonably possible to state agencies or facilities, with convenient access for Purple Heart award recipients. To use these spaces, individuals must have a special permit issued by the commissioner of motor vehicles. Each facility can have up to two designated Purple Heart parking spaces, which must meet Americans with Disabilities Act dimensions and be clearly marked with conspicuous signs positioned between five and seven feet high, potentially including specially painted lines or markings. The signs may also indicate that the spaces are tow-away zones. The legislation aims to provide recognition and convenient parking for military service members who have been wounded in combat and received the Purple Heart award, with the new parking provisions taking effect 90 days after the bill becomes law.
