Bill Summary

AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to the practice of professional geology

AI Summary

This bill updates New York's education law to explicitly include professional geology alongside engineering and land surveying for corporate practice and certification. Specifically, the bill allows corporations practicing engineering or land surveying to also practice geology, provided they have at least one officer or director who is a licensed professional geologist. The bill modifies existing sections of the education law to add professional geology to the types of services for which a corporation can obtain a certificate of authorization. This means that geological firms or engineering firms with geological capabilities can now be officially authorized to provide professional geology services, just like they can for engineering and land surveying. The certificate of authorization will be valid for three years and subject to oversight by the Board of Regents, who can discipline and impose penalties as they do for individual professional licenses. The changes aim to formally recognize and regulate professional geological practice within the state's existing professional services framework.
