Bill Summary

Amends the definition of "historic property" under the State's historic preservation program to include properties included on, or eligible for inclusion on, the national register of historic places or Hawaii register of historic places and any artifacts, records, or material remains relating to the property. Effective 7/1/3000. (HD1)

AI Summary

This bill amends the definition of "historic property" in Hawaii's state law to expand the scope beyond the previous requirement of being over fifty years old. The new definition includes properties that are either listed on or eligible for inclusion on the national register of historic places or Hawaii register of historic places. Importantly, the bill broadens the definition to also encompass any artifacts, records, and material remains directly related to the property, which could include archaeological finds, documents, and other physical evidence. This change will provide a more comprehensive approach to identifying and protecting historically significant sites, moving away from the previous age-based criterion to a more nuanced recognition of historical and cultural importance. The bill will take effect on July 1, 3000, and does not impact any rights, penalties, or legal proceedings that were established before its effective date.
