This bill amends the New York vehicle and traffic law to create a new type of distinctive license plate specifically for recipients of the Bronze or Silver star military awards and their spouses. Under this legislation, Bronze or Silver star recipients (or their spouse) can request a special license plate that displays "Bronze star recipient" or "Silver star recipient". To obtain these plates, applicants must provide proof of their military award status to the commissioner of motor vehicles. The distinctive plates will be issued in the same manner as standard license plates, with the regular registration fee plus a one-time $10 service charge. Importantly, if a distinctive plate is issued to a Bronze or Silver star recipient, their spouse cannot also receive a similar plate. The bill also allocates $5,000 to the department to help cover the costs of producing these special license plates. The new law will take effect 120 days after being signed.
