This bill amends the New York vehicle and traffic law to create a new distinctive license plate option for recipients of the Bronze or Silver Star military awards and their spouses. Under the proposed legislation, Bronze or Silver Star recipients (or their spouses) can request a special license plate that displays the words "Bronze star recipient" or "Silver star recipient" upon application to the state commissioner. The distinctive plate will be issued in the same manner as standard license plates, with the regular registration fee plus a one-time $10 service charge. Importantly, if a recipient receives the distinctive plate, their spouse cannot also receive one. The applicant must provide proof of Bronze or Silver Star status to qualify, and one year after the law's effective date, the department will allocate up to $5,000 to cover the production costs of these specialized license plates. The bill will go into effect 120 days after becoming law, providing time for implementation and public awareness.
