This bill amends the Illinois Vehicle Code to expand an existing registration fee reduction program for military personnel by adding a provision to waive standard registration fees for veterans with service-connected disabilities. Specifically, the bill will eliminate registration fees for passenger motor vehicles of the first division (typically passenger cars) and motor vehicles of the second division (such as trucks or commercial vehicles) weighing 8,000 pounds or less for any veteran who can provide official documentation from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs proving they have a disability directly related to their military service. This change builds upon a previous law that already provided a 50% fee reduction for active duty military personnel stationed outside the United States for extended periods, and now extends similar fee relief to disabled veterans as a form of recognition and support for their military service and sacrifices.
