This bill requires the New York State Commissioner of Education to establish a comprehensive curriculum or instruction about Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander history and civic impact for school districts. The curriculum must be age-appropriate and developed in collaboration with community-based organizations and subject-matter experts. It will cover several key areas, including the diaspora of these communities in New York and the Northeast, significant movements and policies that impacted these communities, their contributions to various fields like government, arts, sciences, and social development, historical structures that have marginalized these communities, and the solidarity between these groups during the civil rights movement. Schools can integrate these materials into their history or social studies curriculum as they see fit. The bill also mandates that the Commissioner develop professional development training for teachers and administrators and produce an annual report to state leadership detailing the implementation of the curriculum, including metrics like the number of schools and students engaged, the geographic distribution of implementation, and recommendations for supporting school districts. The curriculum will become effective on the first of July following the bill's enactment.
