This bill provides for the creation of a new "Campaign Medal for Service" to be awarded by the Governor of New York to military service members who have served in Iraq. The medal can be given to current or former New York citizens who served on active duty in any branch of the United States Armed Forces (including army, air force, navy, marine corps, or coast guard) while deployed in Iraq. Only one medal will be issued per person, and recipients must have maintained an honorable service record. The medal will include a suitable inscription, device, and ribbon, with subsequent awards represented by additional ribbons. If a medal recipient dies, the medal can be presented to a designated representative. The chief of staff of the state's military affairs division will be responsible for establishing rules and regulations for the medal's presentation and distribution. The bill will take effect immediately upon passage.
