This bill establishes a lifetime ferry pass program for retired Maine State Ferry Service employees who meet specific criteria. Specifically, the bill provides that a former state employee who has worked at least 15 years with the Maine State Ferry Service and is currently a year-round resident of one of the islands served by the ferry service can receive a nontransferable lifetime ferry pass. The pass includes unlimited walk-on passenger passage to and from the retiree's island of residence, as well as vehicle transportation benefits: one round-trip vehicle and passenger passage per month during peak season and two round-trip vehicle and passenger passages per month during off-peak season. The bill defines a qualifying vehicle as a non-commercial motor vehicle with 4 or fewer tires and an overall length of 20 feet or less. To use the pass, the retiree must present it when making a reservation and must follow reservation rules established by the Department of Transportation. This benefit is intended to provide a meaningful recognition of long-term service to the Maine State Ferry Service by offering retired employees convenient and cost-effective transportation to and from the islands they have served.
