AI Summary
This bill, in response to concerns about the administration of justice and potential misconduct by a district attorney general in Tennessee's thirtieth judicial district, authorizes the attorney general and reporter to conduct a study of their handling of criminal charges and other related duties. This study will examine how charges from the "Memphis safe task force" (a federal initiative aimed at reducing street and violent crime through aggressive policing and prosecution) were processed, including plea deals, convictions, dismissals, and reasons for declining prosecution. It will also review recommendations for pretrial release and bail, the use of funds, and any alleged misconduct. The attorney general and reporter will have access to all relevant records and must submit a report of their findings by January 1, 2027. If the study reveals clear evidence of a district attorney general refusing to prosecute offenses based on unjustifiable or unconstitutional standards, the attorney general and reporter can petition the state's Supreme Court to appoint a temporary district attorney general, known as a "district attorney general pro tem," to handle those specific prosecutions.
