This bill modifies the salary regulations for registers of wills in Maryland by establishing that the maximum annual salary for a register of wills cannot exceed the salary of a State employee at grade 26, step 20 of the State of Maryland Standard and Bargaining Salary Scale in effect the day before the register begins a new term of office. The bill requires the Board of Public Works to determine each register's salary, taking into account factors such as county population, total fees and taxes collected, and other relevant data. Any salary changes during a register's term of office will not apply to the incumbent register but will take effect at the beginning of the next term. Additionally, the bill removes the obsolete minimum salary requirement for the register of wills in Baltimore City and clarifies that if the office's fees are insufficient to cover expenses, the deficit can be funded from tax remittances. The new salary provisions will not apply to registers already serving in a term of office when the bill takes effect, but will apply to new terms or appointments after October 1, 2025.
