This bill modifies the salary provisions for registers of wills in Maryland by establishing that their maximum annual salary cannot exceed the salary of a State employee at grade 26, step 20 of the Maryland Standard and Bargaining Salary Scale, which will be determined at the start of their new term of office. The bill removes the previous fixed maximum salary of $146,500 and eliminates the obsolete minimum salary requirement for Baltimore City. The Board of Public Works will continue to determine each register's specific salary, guided by factors such as county population, total fees and taxes collected, and other relevant workload data. Importantly, any salary scale changes during a register's term will not apply to the current officeholder but will take effect at the beginning of the next term. The bill also specifies that these new salary provisions will not retroactively impact registers currently serving in their term of office and will instead take effect on October 1, 2025, for new or subsequent terms.
