This bill terminates the James K. Polk Memorial Association, which was previously entrusted with the maintenance of the James K. Polk Home in Columbia, Tennessee. The Tennessee Historical Commission, a state government body responsible for historical preservation, is now required to negotiate in good faith to purchase and take ownership of the James K. Polk Home. The Commission can use available funds for the home's repair, renovation, and public improvement, and will hold legal title to the property. However, the Commission may assign the actual management and operation of the home to a Tennessee nonprofit corporation specifically created for this purpose, provided that corporation maintains the property according to the Commission's guidelines. The bill also mandates that the Tennessee Historical Commission provide an annual report on its duties related to the home and clarifies that this act does not automatically appropriate funds, requiring separate legislative approval for any spending.
