This bill terminates the James K. Polk Memorial Association, which previously held the James K. Polk Home in trust for its maintenance, and transfers the responsibility for the home to the Tennessee Historical Commission. The Tennessee Historical Commission is now tasked with entering into good faith negotiations to purchase and take legal title to the James K. Polk Home in Columbia, Tennessee. While the Commission will hold legal title, it may assign the actual custody and control of the property to a Tennessee nonprofit corporation specifically organized to restore, maintain, and operate the home and its grounds for the benefit of the public. The bill also mandates that the Tennessee Historical Commission report annually on its duties related to the home and clarifies that this act does not appropriate any funds, requiring separate legislative approval for any spending.
