This bill enacts the "Electric Super Highway Act," which requires alternative fuel availability along the New York State Thruway starting November 1, 2025. The bill defines "alternative fuel" broadly to include ethanol, methanol, natural gas, propane, electricity (including solar-generated), hydrogen, and other non-petroleum-based fuels that meet safety and environmental standards. The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority will provide the Thruway Authority with a list of at least three feasible alternative fuels and help implement the new requirements. Specifically, gas stations located on the thruway must offer alternative fuels, with each recommended alternative fuel made available at intervals of no more than 120 miles on both sides of the thruway. This legislation aims to promote the use of cleaner, more diverse fuel options for travelers and support the state's environmental and energy sustainability goals by expanding alternative fuel infrastructure along a major transportation corridor.
