This bill requires the New York State Department of Transportation to develop a scannable code (like a QR code) for work zone and truss type construction signs that, when scanned with a smartphone or tablet, will automatically detect the user's location and display the sign's contents in the most commonly spoken language other than English and Spanish within a ten-mile radius. Beginning one year after the bill's effective date, all work zone signs in areas with residential housing or pedestrian traffic must be printed in both English and Spanish and include this scannable code. Similarly, commercial and industrial structures using truss type construction must also display bilingual signs with the same scannable code. The purpose of this legislation is to improve communication and safety by providing multilingual access to important construction and safety information through technology. The bill aims to help non-English speakers better understand critical safety signage by offering real-time translations based on their local linguistic demographics.
