This bill requires Tennessee's education department to develop and provide a free, asynchronous professional development course about artificial intelligence (AI) usage in classrooms for teachers in grades 6-12. The course will be designed by an entity with expertise in computer science or other STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields and will allow teachers to earn professional development points. Teachers in grades 6-12 must complete at least one department-approved AI training course by August 1, 2027, or within two years of becoming licensed as a teacher in Tennessee, whichever occurs later. Local education agencies (LEAs) and public charter schools will be responsible for approving the professional development points for teachers who complete the AI training, in accordance with state board of education licensure policies. The bill aims to help teachers understand and effectively integrate artificial intelligence tools into their classroom instruction, reflecting the growing importance of AI in education.
