This bill creates a new category of special license plates specifically for firefighters who are also certified emergency medical technicians (EMTs), advanced EMTs, or paramedics. To qualify, an applicant must be a fire department member with a letter from their fire chief, own a passenger automobile, one-ton pickup truck, or motorcycle, be certified as an EMT (with a letter confirming good standing), pay the required special plate fees and registration taxes, and comply with motor vehicle regulations. The special plates will have a unique design distinguishable from existing firefighter and volunteer ambulance attendant plates. These special plates can only be used while the individual remains both a fire department member and a certified EMT/paramedic; if they no longer meet these requirements, they must remove the special plates and obtain regular registration. The plates can be transferred to another qualifying vehicle for a $5 fee, and the fees collected will be credited to the driver and vehicle services operating account. The bill becomes effective January 1, 2026, and allows the commissioner of motor vehicles to adopt rules for implementing these special plates.
