This bill establishes a new type of special license plate for firefighters who are also certified emergency medical technicians (EMTs), advanced EMTs, or paramedics. To qualify, an applicant must be a member of a fire department, own a passenger automobile, one-ton pickup truck, or motorcycle, and have a letter from their fire chief and the Office of Emergency Medical Services confirming their certification and good standing. The special plates will have a unique design distinguishable from other firefighter and volunteer ambulance attendant plates. These plates can only be used while the owner maintains their firefighter and EMT certification; if the individual no longer meets these qualifications or transfers vehicle ownership, they must remove or replace the special plates. The bill allows for a $5 transfer fee to move the plates to another qualifying vehicle owned by the same person, and the fees collected will be credited to the driver and vehicle services operating account. The commissioner of motor vehicles is authorized to create rules for issuing and using these special plates, which will become effective on January 1, 2026.
