This bill extends the provision for compensating unused leave to all employees of Local Education Agencies (LEAs) and public charter schools, which are entities responsible for public education at the local level. Previously, this compensation for unused annual and sick leave, paid to the estate of a deceased employee, was primarily for teachers. Now, the estate of any employee of an LEA or public charter school who dies on or after September 1, 2024, while employed, can receive payment for their unused and accrued leave in the same way that deceased state employees are compensated. Additionally, employees will have the option to designate a specific beneficiary to receive this payment upon their death, with the default beneficiary being the same as their designated recipient for retirement benefits through the Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System.
