Bill Summary

AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to establishing a career explorations class

AI Summary

This bill establishes a mandatory "career explorations" class for high school students designed to better prepare them for future professional and educational opportunities. The class, to be introduced during a student's freshman year, will include comprehensive career preparation activities such as job search workshops, professional guest speakers, internship opportunities, resume and cover letter writing instruction, mock interviews, workplace etiquette training, and SAT and college application guidance. The bill mandates a phased implementation across New York state's school districts over four years, starting with the largest cities and eventually reaching all districts. School districts implementing the course will receive additional funding from lottery funds, and the state education department will develop a performance reporting system to track student, school, and employer participation in career-related learning activities. The class aims to bridge academic and vocational education, create stronger links between secondary and post-secondary education, and provide students with both school-based and work-based learning experiences to better prepare them for future careers.
