This bill establishes a mandatory "career explorations" class for secondary school students, designed to prepare them for future professional and educational opportunities. The class, to be initially offered in the freshman spring semester and expanded to junior year, will include comprehensive career development activities such as job search workshops, professional guest speakers, internship opportunities, resume and interview skills training, workplace etiquette lessons, and SAT and post-secondary application preparation. The class will be implemented gradually across New York state, starting with the largest cities in the first year and expanding to all school districts within four years. Schools that implement the course will receive additional funding from lottery funds, and the state education department will develop performance reporting systems to track student, school, and employer participation in career exploration activities. The goal is to integrate academic and vocational education, create stronger links between secondary and post-secondary education, and provide students with both school-based and work-based learning experiences to better prepare them for future careers and educational paths.
