This bill establishes a three-year pilot program through the Tennessee Department of Education to provide grants for artificial intelligence (AI) weapons detection systems in schools. The program specifically targets Local Education Agencies (LEAs) that have ten or more schools previously identified as low-performing and have experienced student loss due to gun violence in the 2024-2025 school year. The AI weapons detection systems must be capable of identifying weapons like knives and firearms and immediately notifying law enforcement and school administrators upon detection. The department will allocate 100% of appropriated funds to eligible LEAs each year, with the pilot program beginning in the 2025-2026 school year and running through the 2027-2028 school year. If all schools in an eligible LEA already have AI weapons detection systems, remaining grant funds can be used for other approved school security measures. The department is required to submit annual reports to the state's general assembly detailing the number of schools receiving grants, systems purchased, and schools still lacking the technology. The program is set to be repealed on July 31, 2028, effectively sunsetting the initiative after three years of implementation.
