This bill establishes a three-year pilot program administered by the Tennessee Department of Education to provide grants for artificial intelligence (AI) weapons detection systems in schools. The program targets local education agencies (LEAs) that meet specific criteria, including having 10 or more schools identified as low-performing in previous years and experiencing a student loss due to gun violence in the 2024-2025 school year. The AI weapons detection systems must be capable of identifying weapons like knives and firearms and immediately notifying law enforcement and school administration when a weapon is detected. The department will allocate 100% of appropriated funds to eligible LEAs each year, with the goal of equipping schools that do not currently have such systems. If all schools in an eligible LEA are already equipped, remaining funds can be used for other approved school security measures. The program will begin in the 2025-2026 school year and requires annual reporting to the general assembly about grant recipients and system installations. The pilot program is set to automatically expire on July 31, 2028, unless extended or modified by future legislative action.
