This bill revises the special separation allowance options for state and local law enforcement officers, providing two potential calculation methods for officers with at least 30 years of creditable service. The first method calculates the annual special separation allowance at 0.85% of the officer's most recent base compensation for each year of creditable service, applicable to officers who have either completed 30 years of service or are 55 years or older with at least 5 years of service. The second method calculates the allowance at 0.85% of the base compensation at 30 years of service, multiplied by 30. Officers meeting the criteria will have a one-time, irrevocable choice between these two calculation methods. The allowance is paid monthly from the employer and will cease at the officer's death, when they turn 62, or if they are reemployed by a state or local government (with some exceptions for specific part-time or election-related work).
