This bill, known as the "Violent Criminal Court Act," establishes two new criminal courts specifically designated as "violent criminal courts" within the thirtieth judicial district, effective September 1, 2026. The governor will initially appoint judges to these new courts, who will serve until September 2028, after which these judges will be elected by voters for subsequent terms. The presiding judge of the criminal courts is directed to manage caseload backlogs by transferring cases involving serious criminal offenses, as defined by specific sections of Tennessee Code Annotated (§ 40-35-501(aa), (bb), and (cc)), to these newly created violent criminal courts for resolution.
