This bill, known as the "Violent Criminal Court Act," establishes two new criminal courts in the thirtieth judicial district, designated as violent criminal courts, effective September 1, 2026. The governor will initially appoint judges for these courts, who will serve until September 2028, after which the voters of the thirtieth judicial district will elect judges for eight-year terms. The presiding judge of the criminal courts is directed to help reduce case backlogs by transferring cases involving specific serious criminal offenses, as defined in Tennessee Code Annotated Section 40-35-501(aa), (bb), and (cc), to these new violent criminal courts for resolution.
